Common Whirlpool Problems

Is your Whirlpool washer flashing an F21 drain error mid-cycle? Has your Whirlpool refrigerator's fresh-food section gone warm while the freezer stays cold? Whatever the symptom, our Whirlpool repair specialists can diagnose and fix it.

Our technicians have logged thousands of Whirlpool service calls and are trained on every modern Whirlpool platform. The most common Whirlpool repair issues we resolve include:

Whirlpool Washer F21 Drain Error

Common Cause: Clogged Pump Filter

The F21 fault on Whirlpool front-load washers (Duet, Duet Sport, and Cabrio platforms) is by far the most common error code we see — and the cause is almost always a clogged drain pump filter.

Whirlpool's coin trap sits behind the small access panel at the lower-right front of the washer, and over months of use it captures coins, hair clips, fabric tags, and the occasional bobby pin or button. Once the trap is restricted enough that the pump can't move water within the time window the control board allows, you get F21 (or its close cousins F02 and F2E2 on newer models).

If clearing the trap doesn't resolve it, the next suspects are the drain pump motor itself (which often weakens after fighting a partial obstruction for months), a kinked or blocked drain hose behind the unit, or — less commonly — a failed pressure switch that's reporting the tub still has water when it actually doesn't.

Our Whirlpool washer technicians clear the trap, test the pump, inspect the hose, and verify the washer cycles correctly through fill, wash, and drain before we leave. Most F21 calls are resolved in a single visit. Reach out to AG Appliance Service today.

Whirlpool Refrigerator Not Cooling but Freezer Works

Common Cause: Damper or Evaporator Fan

A Whirlpool refrigerator where the freezer is cold but the fresh-food section has warmed to room temperature is one of the most diagnostic-rich service calls we handle — there are three distinct causes, each requiring a different repair.

The most common cause is a failed evaporator fan motor inside the freezer. This fan circulates cold air from the evaporator coil to the fresh-food cavity through a duct at the top. When the fan dies, the freezer stays cold (it's adjacent to the coil) but the fresh-food side gets no airflow. You'll often notice the fridge has gone unusually quiet inside.

Second is a failed damper assembly — a small motorized door that controls how much cold air passes from the freezer into the fresh-food side. When the damper sticks closed, the fresh-food side warms while the freezer stays cold. On most Whirlpool French-door models, the damper is at the top-rear of the fresh-food cavity.

Third is a frosted-over evaporator coil from a defrost system failure. This one starts looking like an evap-fan failure but progresses until the freezer also warms up. Our Whirlpool refrigerator technicians will identify which of the three is at fault and complete the repair in a single visit.

Whirlpool Dryer Not Heating

Common Cause: Thermal Fuse or Heating Element

A Whirlpool dryer that tumbles normally but produces no heat is one of our most common dryer calls, and on electric Whirlpool dryers the cause is almost always one of two components: the thermal fuse or the heating element itself.

The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device wired into the heating circuit. When the dryer overheats — usually because the vent line is clogged with lint and airflow is restricted — the fuse blows permanently and cuts power to the heater. Replacing the fuse without addressing the airflow problem means it will blow again, often within weeks.

If the thermal fuse tests good, the heating element itself is the next suspect. Whirlpool dryer elements typically last 8-12 years before the resistance wire breaks; once it does, the dryer continues to tumble (the motor and controls work fine) but produces no heat. A multimeter test confirms the diagnosis.

On gas Whirlpool dryers, the same "no heat" symptom usually traces to the gas valve coils, igniter, or flame sensor instead. Our technicians stock all of these parts on the truck and will identify the actual failure, complete the repair, and clear the vent line if needed before we leave.

Whirlpool Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes

Common Cause: Clogged Spray Arms or Worn Wash Pump

A Whirlpool dishwasher that runs a complete cycle but leaves dishes still dirty — food residue stuck on plates, glassware that comes out cloudy, or silverware that's still greasy — is one of our most common dishwasher service calls, and the cause is usually one of three things.

The most common cause is clogged spray arm jets. Over time, food particles, mineral deposits from Miami's hard water, and small bits of paper labels from cans can lodge in the small holes of the upper and lower spray arms, killing the water pressure that does the actual cleaning. A thorough cleaning of both arms — including removing them and rinsing them under high-pressure water — usually restores wash quality.

The second cause is a worn wash pump impeller. Whirlpool dishwashers use a motorized impeller to drive water through the spray arms; after years of use, the impeller blades wear and water pressure drops. The third common cause is a failed inlet valve admitting too little water, which leaves the wash pump struggling to circulate enough volume.

Our Whirlpool dishwasher technicians inspect the full wash system, clean or replace failing components, and verify wash performance with a test cycle before we leave. Schedule your Whirlpool dishwasher repair today.
